by Zoologist Perfumes
Bat Zoologist is an intense, earthy fragrance that evokes the deep, damp limestone caves where bats live. It opens with a powerful, photorealistic 'damp earth' accord, rich with geosmin and mineral notes, akin to freshly turned soil after rain. This is immediately joined by soft, tropical fruit notes—banana, fig, and guava—which develop slowly into a sweet, velvet musk, balancing the rawness of the base. Leather, vetiver, and myrrh lend structure and depth, creating a journey from soil to smooth skin. It's bold, long-lasting, and leaves a strong, memorable impression, with projection and longevity often exceeding 12 hours. Despite its intensity, it’s not overwhelming or offensive in the way that unbalanced scents can be—it feels harmonious and intentional. Many reviewers describe it as a masterpiece of olfactory storytelling, perfectly capturing a bat’s habitat with a blend of wildness, sweetness, and mystery. However, its wearability is a key consideration. The scent is confrontationally earthy and animalic, with a persistent, cool 'damp cave' note that can feel invasive or overwhelming to a wider audience. A minority find it evokes unpleasant scents—such as urine, Lysol, or decaying fruit—but these reactions are clearly tied to personal sensitivity. While it's not recommended for most public settings due to its sillage, it is praised as wearable with care, especially in environmental contexts like gardening or hiking, and remains a favorite among those seeking bold, artistic perfumes. The original formulation is now discontinued but available through Olympic Orchids as Night Flyer.
