by Zoologist Perfumes
Civet Zoologist presents a deeply textured, vintage-inspired chypre that balances lavish florals, resins, and coffee with a subdued yet evocative animalic undertone. Though named for the civet, the fragrance is more notably a rich, warm, and aromatic oriental with complex layers rather than a direct animalic bomb. On skin, the opening features bright citrus, spicy tarragon, and a curious floral crescendo dominated by tuberose, frangipani, and ylang-ylang—creating a sensation of sweet, almost gourmand depth. The animalic aspect is felt rather than smelled directly, contributing a velvety hum and a faintly skanky, musky base that grounds the composition without overwhelming it. Over time, the fragrance evolves into a serene, ambered warmth with notes of vanilla, incense, and leather playing a subtle supporting role. It performs exceptionally well in cooler weather, lingering for over 12 hours with moderate to strong projection, and feels distinctly unisex—ideal for evening wear or cold-season gatherings. While the animalic character is gentle and indirect, some find it underwhelming or lacking in depth, and others describe it as overly sweet or floral. Its strength lies in its harmony and artistry, making it a true olfactory experience rather than a straightforward scent.
